About Penn Parking

Penn Parking operates more than 30 parking facilities throughout Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. The company handles parking at office buildings, hospitals, sporting events, universities, airports, condominiums, transportation hubs and municipalities. Whether it’s long-term or short-term, commercial or residential, self-park or valet, Penn Parking is equipped to fulfill any parking demand.

The company started in 1983 with humble roots, with Lisa Renshaw, Penn Parking’s president, taking over a failing parking garage near Baltimore’s Penn Station at the age of 21. Unable to afford employees but needing an attendant 24 hours a day, Lisa moved into the garage, using a carpet remnant for a bed and a kerosene heater for warmth. For Lisa, parking, washing and waxing cars was the easy part. The challenge was fending off rodents and shoveling snow at 4:30 a.m. so customers could enter the garage. After three and a half years of determination and spirit, Penn Parking took over its second location. The rest, as they say, is history. The company has received considerable attention in the national and local media for its creativity, innovative marketing strategies and reporting. Profiles of the company have appeared in Reader’s Digest, Inc., Success, Baltimore Sun, Washington Times and Good Housekeeping. Visit them at www.pennparking.com.

The situation

Penn Parking approached Gross Mendelsohn’s Technology Solutions Group in 2008 because they were unhappy with their accounting software vendor, who didn’t respond quickly to questions and software maintenance needs. Sharon Paul of Gross Mendelsohn’s Technology Solutions Group met with Victoria Grove of Penn Parking. Sharon assessed Penn Parking’s needs by listening to Victoria talk about the business, their processes and how they use their accounting software package. Sharon recommended the company switch to Sage ERP Accpac — a less expensive software package than they were using – because of their high volume of invoices. Sharon and Beth McNally, one of Gross Mendelsohn’s Sage Certified Consultants, implemented Sage ERP Accpac and trained its staff how to use the system. Sharon and Beth customized Penn Parking’s accounting system to include features such as credit card processing. The Technology Solutions Group provides ongoing Sage ERP Accpac support to Penn Parking.

In our client's words

“When we decided a few years ago to change accounting software vendors, we found Gross Mendelsohn’s Technology Solutions Group. Since we changed, it’s been a complete 180 in terms of service and support. Not only do we get a response from Beth McNally or Sharon Paul the same day we ask a question … it’s usually within the hour.

In addition to providing ongoing support, Gross Mendelsohn’s Technology Solutions Group also helped us find the best fit between Penn Parking and an accounting software package. With our high volume of monthly invoices and lack of inventory, Sharon Paul recommended Sage ERP Accpac for us. It’s turned out to be a fantastic fit for Penn Parking.”
