Is your computer protected?

Nov 3, 2010

With the recent outbreak of computer viruses, it is especially important to make sure your antivirus software is up to date and the latest Microsoft Windows patches have been installed on your computer.

Most malicious software (malware) is installed on a machine without the user realizing it. For example, malware can be installed simply by opening an email, visiting a legitimate website or even closing or cancelling a pop-up window. These are ways malicious software can circumvent your antivirus program.

Symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, your computer might be infected.

  • Your computer is running slowly
  • Your computer is locking up or not responding
  • Your computer restarts on its own
  • Applications aren't working properly

Protect your computer

We strongly suggest following the steps below to help keep your computer safe.

  • Make sure your anti-virus software is up to date.
  • Pay attention and respond quickly to any alerts from your anti-virus program.
  • Promptly install Windows Updates. Your computer should be set up to alert you when new updates are available. On October 12, Microsoft released its biggest-ever security update, fixing 49 vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer and Office.
  • Never click on anything a pop-up window. Instead, use the keyboard combination ALT and F4. Holding ALT and pressing F4 will close the windows that is on top (which should be the malicious pop-up).
